Obviously the cool way to give a grad speech this year is to be caustic, biting, pithy, seemingly deep and pseudo inspirational – one speaker (Princeton?) said, "and with luck comes obligation. You owe a debt, and not just to your
Gods. You owe a debt to the unlucky." GODS? "Raise your KALI arms if you feel me!"
What is this piece of warm, steaming P.C. uselessness?
Okay, so, I may not be the biggest bible banging kid in the class but when I think of gaining knowledge and achieving an education, I never – have ever – thought, "GORSH, let's do it for the Gods!" (Damn, you Denise Williams!!!!)
I understand what he (maybe) is attempting to communicate but, "Ye, Gods!" Really?! And that statement/concept aside, do we think our teens to Ivy League Grads are not smart enough to know what's going on? That they have no barometer for reality because they are younger (typically) than the speaker is? Give the kids some credit. They know the market is crap. They don't need your "Parental Pep-Talk" to make it all better. Kissing the economical 'boo-boo' with deliciously transcribed venom. On my end, I would have started telling these self-righteous dill-seeds that we get it, move on and say something useful...like, what will be the next profitable IPO and where can I buy in. Just saying...my bad (perhaps). But let's not sanctify these sanctimonious gobbly gook soothsayer who seem more 'bitter queen' than progressive and memorable mentor. UGH.
The path is going to be hard for all of us – barreling toward a more and more uncertain end. But, please, 'mentors' get it through your jaded skulls that these students and their families are here to get their 30k or more piece of scrap paper and be wisked off to some party to commemorate. You have an issue with the reality of the economic forcast? Buy a vowel, call the congress and get a life.
